Nebraska cattle markets
Nebraska is a major link in the U.S. beef chain, combining Sandhills cow-calf production with extensive feedlot finishing. The Sandhills and other western and central range areas supply large numbers of calves and yearlings, while feedlots are concentrated in the Panhandle, central Platte Valley, and other corn-producing areas. Fall weaning runs are important for calf marketing, and yearling cattle also move through auction markets and direct channels through much of the year. Markets in areas such as Omaha, Norfolk, Lexington, and western Nebraska are familiar cattle-trade locations.
Nebraska cattle market commentary
Compared to last week steers less than 700 lbs sold 3.00 to 15.00 lower, yearlings over 700 lbs sold steady to 10.00 higher. Heifers less than 700 lbs sold mostly steady to 7.00 higher on light weights. Yearling heifers sold 20.00 lower. Demand was light to good. Calf market held pretty firm until the week's close when the market fell off pretty sharp at those auctions. CME cattle boards were lower most of the week. Along with muddy weaning pens and some sick calves around buyers desire to lay in more fresh calves at current levels was not in their playing cards. Some late week calf prices roughly 20.00 lower in places compared to last weeks sales. Feed lot pens in some areas are muddy and deep for going into winter and with big, heavy fat cattle trudging though them feedlot managers took early cash bids to get cattle out of the mud. Live sales sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower from 223.00 to 226.00 and dressed sales sold 3.00 to 10.00 lower from 348.00 to 355.00.
