Nebraska cattle markets
Nebraska is a major link in the U.S. beef chain, combining Sandhills cow-calf production with extensive feedlot finishing. The Sandhills and other western and central range areas supply large numbers of calves and yearlings, while feedlots are concentrated in the Panhandle, central Platte Valley, and other corn-producing areas. Fall weaning runs are important for calf marketing, and yearling cattle also move through auction markets and direct channels through much of the year. Markets in areas such as Omaha, Norfolk, Lexington, and western Nebraska are familiar cattle-trade locations.
Nebraska cattle market commentary
Compared to last week, steer calves sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher and heifer calves sold unevenly steady. Yearling steers from 700 to 900 lbs sold 6.00 to 10.00 higher over 900 lbs sold 2.00 higher with 1000 lbs steers 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Yearling heifers sold from 70 to 900 lbs sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower, over 900 lbs sold 4.00 higher, especially on preg checked open replacement heifers. Demand was moderate to good. First really good sample of bawling spring calves this week. Majority of the weights less than 650 lbs were right off the cow. Several lots had precondition shots with few lots only having spring vaccinations. Several large strings of yearlings that came off of summer grass on hand. Feedlots traded live cattle 5.00 higher at 350.00 and live sales sold 1.00 to 5.00 higher. Spotty rain showers in some areas with a fall like feel to the weather at week's close. Silage chopping in full swing with some feedlots taking in high moisture corn.
