Iowa cattle markets
Iowa is an important cattle-feeding state, supported by abundant corn and a network of feedlots that finish cattle for beef production. Cow-calf and backgrounding operations are also common, particularly in the southern and western parts of the state. Feeder cattle move through livestock auctions and direct marketing channels across the state, often after weaning. Spring calving is common, and fall brings a substantial run of weaned calves and yearlings.
Iowa cattle market commentary
Compared to last week steers and heifers sold unevenly steady with lower undertones noted by week's close. A lot of variance in weights and kind from this week to last. Demand was moderate to good in some cases. Slaughter steers and heifers sold steady. Slaughter cows sold 2.00 to 7.00 higher and bull sold 8.00 higher. Overall, the market was pretty good despite the sharp losses in the CME cattle boards through the week. Many farmer/feeders were back in the field trying to get crops out before the next wave of wet weather blows through from the west.
