Missouri cattle market commentary
Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 10.00 on another very light test. Once again, this week's heat interfered with livestock marketing. Several barns remained dark while others didn't require much time to take care of business. There were some rays of hope towards late week that perhaps markets have found bottoms. The futures showed some life this week and fed cattle trade was slightly higher. Some cooler temperatures and some rain late last week and over the weekend were very welcome even if the break in the heat is only temporary. As August kicks off crops and pastures look good to very good for much of the state despite the heat over the last few weeks. Once again stick-out sales were limited this week with the light offering and not a lot of drafts over 20 head. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 51 head of 561 lb. steers for 463.00, 45 head of 668 lb. steers for 400.00and a full load of 825 lb. steers for 353.00. Tina Livestock Market sold 243 head of 906 lb. steers for 337.25. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 37 head of 607 lb. heifers for 411.00. Boxed beef cut-out values mixed but virtually unchanged for the week as of Friday's close. Choice closed at 361.38, up 0.14 and Select closed at 346.23, down 0.48 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is 15.15 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday were reported near 25K head, it is likely more sales occurred after the report cutoff. Prices were steady to higher this week with the tops of this week's markets showing up late in the week. Live sales reported mostly at 232.00-235.00 and dressed sales mostly 365.00-368.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 729 head with a weighted average weight of 537.91 lbs. and a price value of 433.04, 3.22 lower than last week. The steer/heifer is 41.94 per cwt.
