Kansas cattle markets
Kansas is a major link in the US beef chain, combining large feedlot finishing capacity in the west with cow-calf and stocker activity elsewhere in the state. The Flint Hills are well known for summer grazing of stocker cattle on native grass, while the High Plains support many feedyards. Cattle are marketed through auctions, video and direct sales, and feedlot procurement channels. Spring grass turnout and fall movement of calves and yearlings are important seasonal patterns.
Kansas cattle market commentary
Another light volume week of feeder cattle on offer in Kansas. except for Winter Livestock's Anniversary Sale. Compared to last week at regular weekly auctions, steers and heifers under 600 lbs not enough on offer to test. 600 to 800 lb steers sold 8.00 to 15.00 lower, while those over 800 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers 600 to 750 lbs sold 13.00 to 15.00 lower, while those over 750 lbs were unevenly steady. Pressure from the CME Cattle complex and lower boxed beef prices have caused feeder cattle prices to come off recent record highs. Light trading of slaughter cows and bulls sold steady to 5.00 lower. Compared to last week, trading of Kansas negotiated fed cattle sold 7.00 to 8.00 lower at 230.00 on light trading. In the hay market, hay movement remained steady across the state. Many producers have begun third cutting alfalfa, with yields reported as near to below average. Quality has been reported as very good where producers were able to bale ahead of recent rainfall. Brome hay yields and quality continue to vary significantly by region, while prairie hay harvest is just beginning in many areas of the state.
