Alabama's cattle industry is centered on cow-calf production, with pasture-based herds spread across much of the state. The Black Belt, Tennessee Valley, and eastern and southern counties are important cattle areas, supported by a network of local livestock auctions. Many producers market weaned calves in the fall after spring calving, while spring sales also bring cattle from fall-calving operations. Calves commonly move to stocker programs, backgrounding operations, or feedlots outside the state.
