Colorado cattle markets
Colorado participates in several parts of the beef chain, including cow-calf production, stocker grazing, and feedlot finishing. Eastern Colorado is a major feedlot region, while ranching is important on the Western Slope, in the mountain valleys, and across the eastern plains. The state's cattle markets and feedlots draw cattle from Colorado and surrounding western and plains states. Calf sales commonly increase in the fall following spring calving, and yearlings are marketed as grass and forage conditions change through the year.

Why do lighter cattle cost more per hundredweight?
Buyers usually pay a higher price per pound for lighter calves than for heavy yearlings, a pattern often called the price slide, because lighter cattle have more weight left to gain. That is why a 5-weight steer can post a higher per-cwt price than an 8-weight steer at the same auction.
