Kentucky cattle markets
Kentucky has a broad cow-calf industry based on pasture, with cattle production spread across the Bluegrass region and much of central, western, and eastern Kentucky. Many operations market weaned calves and feeder cattle through local livestock auctions, and some retain cattle for backgrounding on grass and stored forage. Spring and fall calving seasons both occur, creating marketing activity around weaning periods. Fall calf runs are a familiar feature of the state's auction markets.
Kentucky cattle market commentary
Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold 4.00 to 8.00 lower with instances to sharply lower. Yearling steers and heifers were trending firm with limited comparable receipts. Demand was mostly moderate throughout the week with best interest for long weaned and pre-conditioned packages and groups which were in good demand. Reporters cite the unseasonably warm temperatures and high humidity as contributing to the weaker overall demand for feeder calves. Slaughter cows and bulls were unevenly steady with reports ranging from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher showing good demand for all slaughter classes.
