Salsa Garden
A salsa garden gathers the fresh, colorful ingredients needed for homemade salsa close to the kitchen. It is an easy warm-season garden with plenty of harvests for snacking, canning, and sharing.
What to grow in a Salsa Garden
How to design it
Place tomatoes, peppers, and tomatillos in full sun, spacing them for good airflow and adding cages or stakes at planting time. Grow cilantro and green onions along bed edges where they are easy to clip. If using a small space, skip cucumber or train it vertically on a trellis.
Care through the season
Water at the soil level so foliage stays dry, and mulch after the ground warms. Feed fruiting plants with compost or a tomato and vegetable fertilizer, following the product label. Sow cilantro every two to three weeks in spring and again in fall for a longer harvest.
Tips
Pick tomatoes and peppers regularly to keep plants producing. Tomatillos need at least two plants for reliable pollination. Cilantro can bolt in summer heat, so give it afternoon shade in hot regions.
