How to Start Blueberries From Seed
Blueberries can be started from seed, but they are slow and seedlings will not reliably match the parent plant. Most home gardeners use named nursery plants, while seed starting is best for patience and experimentation.

Start indoors or direct sow?
Start blueberry seeds indoors because they are tiny, slow to establish, and need controlled moisture. Do not direct sow in the garden, where seed is easily lost to drying, weeds, and uneven conditions.
When to start Blueberries seeds
Cold-stratify seed for about 60 to 90 days before sowing, then start indoors about 12 to 16 weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant only after frost danger has passed and plants have developed several true leaves and a good root system.
How to sow the seeds
Surface-sow seeds on a moistened, acidic seed-starting mix, then press them in lightly without covering them or cover only with a dusting of fine mix. Use shallow cells or pots with drainage, cover loosely to retain humidity, and provide bright light.
Germination
Germination often takes about 14 to 30 days and can be irregular. Keep the medium consistently moist and warm, roughly 65 to 75 F, but never waterlogged.
Seedling care
Provide strong grow lights for 14 to 16 hours each day and water gently so the small seeds and seedlings are not displaced. Use clean containers, good air circulation, and bottom watering when practical to reduce damping off.
Transplanting & hardening off
Harden plants off gradually over 7 to 10 days, then plant them in full sun to light shade in well-drained, acidic soil. Space according to the expected mature variety size and mulch after planting, keeping mulch away from the stem.
Tips
Use seed from ripe berries and expect substantial variation in fruit quality, size, and maturity. Check soil pH before planting outside, because blueberries generally need strongly acidic soil, commonly around pH 4.5 to 5.5.
