When & How to Harvest Blueberries
Blueberries need to be fully ripe before picking because they do not improve much after harvest. Timing matters for sweetness, color, and easy separation from the stem.
How to tell it is ready
Harvest berries when they are fully blue all over with no red or green near the stem end. Ripe berries come off easily with a light roll between your fingers, while unripe ones cling tightly.
How to harvest
Pick gently by hand, rolling ripe berries into your palm or a container without squeezing them. Avoid stripping clusters hard, since that can knock off unripe fruit and bruise ripe berries.
Timing
Blueberries ripen over several weeks in summer, so plan on multiple pickings every few days. Harvest in the morning after the fruit is cool and dry. Many varieties hold best if you wait a short time after full color before picking, but do not leave overripe fruit too long.
After the harvest
Keep berries shaded and cool them quickly after harvest. Do not wash until you are ready to use them, since extra moisture shortens storage life. Refrigerate promptly in shallow containers.
Tips
Pick only dry berries for better keeping. Harvest every few days during peak season so ripe fruit does not soften on the bush.
