When & How to Harvest Okra
Okra is best when pods are picked young and tender. Waiting even a few days too long can make pods fibrous and slow new pod production.

How to tell it is ready
Harvest pods when they are bright green, tender, and usually about 2 to 4 inches long, or a little longer for naturally slender varieties. Pods should snap easily and still feel soft, not hard or swollen.
How to harvest
Use pruners or a sharp knife to cut pods from the plant, leaving a short stem stub. Avoid pulling by hand, which can strip bark or break branches.
Timing
Okra often starts producing about 50 to 65 days after planting and needs picking every day or two in hot weather. Harvest in the morning when pods are crisp. Make repeated passes through the row.
After the harvest
Handle pods gently because they bruise easily. Cool them promptly and store dry in the refrigerator. Do not wash until just before use.
Tips
Pick frequently to keep plants flowering and setting pods. Remove oversized pods so the plant keeps producing usable ones.
