About Golden Ball
Golden Ball, sometimes sold as Orange Jelly, is an old heirloom turnip with round roots that have amber-gold skin and distinctive pale yellow flesh. The flavor is mild, sweet, and nutty, milder than many white turnips, and the firm flesh holds up well in storage. It is a favorite for autumn and winter use.
Growing Golden Ball Turnip
Sow in mid to late summer for a fall crop, since cool weather brings out its sweetness, and thin seedlings to about 3 to 4 inches apart. It matures in roughly 45 to 65 days and stores well in a cool, humid place after harvest. Pick roots at about 3 inches across for the best flavor and keep the soil evenly moist to avoid woodiness.
