About Bloomsdale Long Standing
Bloomsdale Long Standing is a classic open-pollinated heirloom prized for its thick, deeply crinkled (savoy) dark green leaves that hold up well in cooking and bunching. The flavor is rich and full, and as the name suggests it stands longer before bolting than the original Bloomsdale, giving a longer harvest window. Plants grow in a fairly upright rosette with heavy, glossy foliage.
Growing Bloomsdale Long Standing Spinach
Direct sow in cool weather for spring and fall crops, spacing plants about 4 to 6 inches apart, since spinach resents transplanting. The heavily savoyed leaves trap grit, so mulch to keep them clean and wash carefully before use. Pick outer leaves as the rosette matures and harvest the whole plant before warm, long days trigger bolting.
