About Yukon Gold
Yukon Gold is a Canadian-bred yellow-fleshed potato prized for its thin, smooth tan skin and moist, buttery flesh that needs little added fat. It is an all-purpose to slightly waxy variety that holds together well when boiled yet still bakes and mashes nicely, which is why it became a home-garden standard. Plants mature in the early to mid season, making it a dependable choice across much of the US.
Growing Yukon Gold Potato
Plant seed pieces about 12 inches apart in rows 30 to 36 inches wide and hill soil up around the stems as they grow to keep tubers covered and prevent green shoulders. As an early to midseason type it fits both spring and, in mild regions, late-summer plantings, and the tubers size up before many late-season diseases peak. Harvest when the vines begin to yellow and die back, and cure the tubers in a cool, dark, airy spot before storage.
