About Kennebec
Kennebec is a widely grown white-fleshed, buff-skinned variety valued as a high-yielding all-purpose potato that fries, bakes, and boils well. It is popular with home growers partly for its vigorous plants and its useful field resistance to late blight and some other foliar diseases. The tubers are large and smooth with shallow eyes that make them easy to peel.
Growing Kennebec Potato
Give the vigorous vines room by spacing seed pieces about 12 to 14 inches apart and hilling generously, since the plants produce a heavy set of tubers close to the surface. It is a midseason variety that performs well across a long summer, but keep tubers well covered because exposed ones turn green. Harvest after the tops die down, and handle the large tubers gently to avoid bruising before curing and storage.
