About Tom Thumb
Tom Thumb is a very old heirloom dwarf pea that grows just 8 to 9 inches tall, making it one of the smallest shelling peas available. Despite its tiny stature it produces full-size, sweet peas and thrives in containers, window boxes, and cold frames. Its extreme compactness is its defining trait.
Growing Tom Thumb Pea
No trellis is needed thanks to the diminutive, self-supporting plants, which suit pots and small raised beds well. Sow in early spring, or even in a cold frame for an extra-early crop, spacing plants a few inches apart. Harvest when the small pods are well filled, and pick regularly to keep the little plants productive.
