Charentais is a French heirloom true cantaloupe with small, round fruit, a smooth gray-green rind marked by shallow sutures, and deep orange, intensely fragrant flesh. It is celebrated for concentrated sweetness and perfume rather than size, and it is a favorite of gourmet gardeners despite a relatively thin rind and short shelf life.

Growing Charentais Melon

Charentais needs a warm, sunny spot and a full season of heat to develop its signature aroma, so space vines about 24 to 36 inches apart and consider a warm microclimate or black mulch in cooler regions. Unlike netted melons, ripeness cues rely on scent and color: watch for the rind to shift toward creamy yellow-gray and a rich perfume at the blossom end. Pick promptly, since the fruit ripens quickly and does not store long.
