How to Store Spinach

Spinach is very perishable and should be cooled quickly after harvest. The goal is cold, moist storage without trapping free water on the leaves.

Spinach

Best storage conditions

Store at 32 to 36 F with very high humidity, around 95 to 100 percent. Keep it dark and cold in the refrigerator.

How long it keeps

Usually 5 to 10 days, depending on leaf age and handling.

Storage methods

Remove damaged leaves, but do not wash until use unless you dry it very well. Store in a perforated bag or container lined with a dry paper towel to catch excess moisture. Keep it away from warmer fridge spots and from crushing.

Freezing & preserving

Freeze after washing and blanching. Spinach can also be dried for soups or seasoning blends. If canning, use only tested USDA or NCHFP recipes, and because spinach is low-acid it requires pressure canning.

Tips

Check often and replace damp towels if needed. Store away from ethylene-producing apples, pears, and melons.
