How to Start Oregano From Seed
Oregano is a perennial herb that starts readily from seed, although seedlings are small and slow early on. It is usually grown indoors first for an earlier, more manageable start.

Start indoors or direct sow?
Start oregano indoors and transplant after frost for the best results. You can direct sow after frost, but tiny seedlings need careful weeding and thinning.
When to start Oregano seeds
Start indoors 6 to 10 weeks before the average last spring frost. Direct sow after frost once the soil is warming in spring.
How to sow the seeds
Sow seeds on the surface of sterile seed-starting mix and press them in, or cover them no more than 1/16 inch. Use cell trays or small pots with drainage, then keep the tray in bright indirect light until seedlings emerge.
Germination
Germination generally takes 7 to 14 days in soil around 65 to 75 F. Maintain even moisture with a light mist or bottom watering.
Seedling care
After sprouting, provide strong light for 14 to 16 hours a day and keep air moving around the plants. Water when the mix begins to dry, thin extras, and avoid overwatering to limit damping off.
Transplanting & hardening off
Harden seedlings off for 7 to 10 days before planting outside after the last frost. Transplant into full sun and well-drained soil, spacing plants to allow their mature spread.
Tips
Surface-sow because oregano seed is very small. Pinch young plants after they are established to encourage branching.
