About Chandler
Chandler is a June-bearing (short-day) variety prized in warmer regions for large, wedge-shaped, bright-red berries with excellent sweet flavor. It is a heavy producer often grown commercially in California and the Southeast, and it performs especially well in annual plasticulture systems. The fruit is attractive and flavorful but somewhat soft, so it is best for fresh eating and local markets.
Growing Chandler Strawberry
In mild-winter areas plant in fall on raised beds with plastic mulch, spacing plants about 12 to 14 inches apart for a concentrated spring crop. Because the berries are soft and sit near the soil, use straw or plastic mulch to keep fruit clean and pick frequently to avoid rot. Harvest when berries are fully red and firm, ideally in the cool of the morning.
