About Watermelon
Watermelon radish is a type of Chinese daikon with a round root that is pale green and white on the outside and a striking pink to magenta inside, resembling a cut watermelon. The flavor is mild and slightly sweet, becoming milder than many radishes when grown in cool conditions. It is often sliced raw for its color or roasted.
Growing Watermelon Radish
This is best grown as a fall crop, sown in mid to late summer so the roots mature in cooling weather, which improves color and sweetness. Give it more space, thinning to about 3 to 4 inches apart, since roots can reach 2 to 4 inches across. It needs a longer season of roughly 55 to 65 days, so harvest before hard freezes.
