About Robust 997

Robust 997 is a hybrid yellow popcorn from the Robust line of popping-corn hybrids, bred for dependable yield and strong, uniform popping expansion rather than ornamental color. The vigorous, full-season plants produce sturdy ears of hard, pointed yellow kernels. As a hybrid it tends to mature more evenly and consistently in the field than open-pollinated heirlooms.

Growing Robust 997 Popcorn

Give it a full, warm growing season and space plants about 8 to 10 inches apart in a block of several rows for reliable wind pollination. Because it is a longer-season type, start it early enough that ears can fully mature and dry before the first frost, and note that saved seed will not come true, so buy fresh seed each year. Wait until husks are dry and kernels are rock hard on the stalk, then finish curing to the ideal popping moisture before storing.
