About Dakota Black

Dakota Black is an open-pollinated popcorn with striking, glossy dark purple to near-black kernels that also make handsome ornamental ears. The plants are relatively compact and early maturing, which suits cooler northern climates and shorter seasons. When popped, the dark kernels open into small white to tan flakes, so it serves for both decoration and eating.

Growing Dakota Black Popcorn

Space plants roughly 8 to 12 inches apart in a block for good pollination, and lean on the early maturity in short-season or high-elevation gardens. Keep it isolated from other corn varieties so the deep kernel color stays true. Let the ears dry fully on the stalk until the husks are papery, then finish curing before shelling and storing.
