About Japanese Hulless

Japanese Hulless, also sold as White Rice, is an heirloom white popcorn valued for small, pointed kernels that pop into tender flakes with very little noticeable hull. The productive plants are moderate in height and usually set several slender ears each. It has long been a home-garden favorite for popping thanks to its delicate texture and reliable expansion.

Growing Japanese Hulless Popcorn

Plant in a block of at least four rows with plants spaced about 8 to 10 inches apart to get well-filled ears from wind pollination. It suits a normal warm summer and is quite productive, so a little support can help if plants become top-heavy with multiple ears. Harvest once the husks dry and kernels harden, then cure indoors and test-pop a small sample to confirm the moisture is right.
