How to Store Mint

Fresh mint wilts and darkens quickly, so think short refrigerator storage or preserve it soon after harvest. It dries and freezes well if you have more than you can use fresh.

Mint

Best storage conditions

For fresh storage, keep mint at 32 to 36 F with high humidity and low light. Refrigeration is best, while dried mint should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place.

How long it keeps

Fresh mint usually keeps 5 to 7 days, sometimes about 1 week. Dried mint keeps best quality for about 6 to 12 months.

Storage methods

Trim stems and place them in a jar with a little water, loosely cover, and refrigerate, or wrap sprigs in a slightly damp towel inside a bag. Change water if using the jar method. Do not leave bunches wet and tightly sealed.

Freezing & preserving

Mint can be frozen whole, chopped, or in ice cube trays with water. It also dries well, but dry it quickly with good airflow to avoid mold. Use tested USDA or NCHFP recipes for syrups, jellies, or other canned products.

Tips

Remove bruised leaves before storing. Keep mint away from ethylene-producing fruit for the freshest appearance.
