How to Store Melons

Melons store differently depending on ripeness and type, but most keep best once fully mature and cooled. Whole melons last longer than cut ones.

Melons

Best storage conditions

Whole ripe melons usually keep best at about 36 to 45 F with high humidity, around 85 to 90 percent. Keep them out of direct light, and refrigerate cut melon promptly.

How long it keeps

Whole cantaloupe or muskmelon often keeps 5 to 15 days, watermelon about 1 to 2 weeks, and cut melon about 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator.

Storage methods

Let some melons finish ripening at room temperature if needed, then refrigerate. Store whole melons with space for air movement, and wrap cut pieces well or place them in covered containers. Do not leave cut melon at room temperature.

Freezing & preserving

Freeze cut melon for smoothies or sauces, though texture softens after thawing. Some melons can be pickled or made into preserves. Use tested USDA or NCHFP recipes for any home canning.

Tips

Use cracked or overripe melons first. Keep melons away from strong-smelling foods because they can pick up odors in the refrigerator.
