Melons Pests & Diseases
Melons such as cantaloupe, honeydew, and muskmelon are warm-season cucurbits that draw beetles and sucking insects, while their sprawling, humid canopies invite fungal leaf diseases. The two challenges are linked, because cucumber beetles both chew the plants and spread bacterial wilt, so early insect control is also disease prevention.

Common Melons pests
Striped and spotted cucumber beetles are the top threat, chewing seedlings and flowers and transmitting bacterial wilt; look for yellow beetles with black stripes or spots and ragged holes in leaves. Squash bugs are flat, gray to brown shield-shaped insects that suck sap and cause leaves to wilt and yellow, laying bronze egg clusters on leaf undersides. Squash vine borers tunnel into stems, causing sudden wilting and leaving sawdust-like frass near a hole at the base. Melon (cotton) aphids cluster on leaf undersides and secrete sticky honeydew that leads to sooty mold, and spider mites cause fine stippling and webbing in hot, dry weather. Deer, groundhogs, and rodents may browse foliage and gnaw ripening fruit.
Common diseases
Powdery mildew shows as white powdery patches on leaves and stems and is the most common melon disease, while downy mildew produces angular yellow spots on the upper leaf with gray, fuzzy growth beneath. Bacterial wilt, spread by cucumber beetles, causes runners to wilt and collapse even when soil is moist, and a cut stem may ooze a sticky, stringy sap. Fusarium wilt yellows and wilts one side of the plant and discolors the inner stem, and anthracnose and gummy stem blight cause dark sunken leaf spots, stem cankers, and fruit rot. Aphid-transmitted mosaic viruses (cucumber mosaic, watermelon mosaic, papaya ringspot) cause mottled, distorted leaves and stunted plants with poorly formed, mottled fruit.
Prevention
Rotate melons and other cucurbits so they do not return to the same bed for at least two to three years, and choose varieties labeled resistant to powdery mildew, Fusarium, or mosaic where available. Give plants full sun and wide spacing for airflow, water at the base with drip or a soaker hose to keep foliage dry, and water in the morning so leaves dry quickly. Wait until soil is truly warm to plant, keep beds weeded, and remove and compost or discard old vines and heavily diseased leaves at the end of the season to reduce overwintering pests and spores.
Organic control
Cover young plants with floating row covers from transplanting until flowering to exclude cucumber beetles, squash bugs, and borers, then remove the covers so bees can pollinate. Hand-pick squash bugs, beetles, and egg masses in the morning and drop them into soapy water, and use yellow sticky traps to monitor and reduce beetles. Treat aphids, mites, and whiteflies with insecticidal soap or neem oil applied to leaf undersides, and encourage lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps by tolerating minor pest levels. For powdery and downy mildew, apply a labeled sulfur, copper, or potassium bicarbonate product at the first sign, and use copper for bacterial and anthracnose issues; always read and follow the product label, and avoid sulfur in high heat.
Scouting & monitoring
Scout at least twice a week, starting at emergence, since seedlings are most vulnerable to cucumber beetles and wilt. Check leaf undersides for aphids, mites, whiteflies, and squash bug eggs, and inspect the base of vines for borer entry holes and frass through midsummer. Watch for the first white spots of powdery mildew and any sudden wilting during flowering and fruit set, and note runners that collapse overnight as a sign of bacterial wilt so infected plants can be pulled promptly.
Tips
Focus your energy on protecting plants early, because controlling cucumber beetles at the seedling stage prevents most bacterial wilt later. Combine row covers before bloom with base watering and good spacing, and you will head off the majority of both insect and disease problems without heavy sprays.
