How to Store Basil
Fresh basil is a warm-loving herb and does not keep well in a very cold refrigerator. Think of it as a short-term fresh herb unless you plan to dry or freeze it.

Best storage conditions
For short-term fresh storage, keep basil around 50 to 55 F if possible, with moderate humidity and out of direct sun. At normal room temperature, keep stems in water in bright indoor light but not hot sun.
How long it keeps
Fresh basil usually lasts about 2 to 5 days in the refrigerator if wrapped carefully, or 5 to 7 days at room temperature with stems in water. Dried or frozen basil lasts much longer.
Storage methods
Treat basil like a cut bouquet, trim stems and place in a jar with a little water, then loosely cover if desired. If refrigerating, keep leaves dry and wrapped in a barely damp paper towel inside a loose bag. Do not store basil in the coldest fridge areas.
Freezing & preserving
Freeze whole leaves, chopped basil, or basil in oil or water in small portions. Drying is possible, though flavor changes compared with fresh. For herb pastes or other canned products, use tested USDA or NCHFP recipes.
Tips
Remove any blackened leaves promptly. Keep basil away from ethylene-producing fruit on the counter.
