How to Start Asparagus From Seed
Asparagus can be started from seed, although most home gardeners plant one-year crowns for a faster harvest. Seed-grown plants are useful for growing many plants economically and for selecting vigorous individuals.

Start indoors or direct sow?
Start indoors in cool-spring regions or direct sow in a prepared nursery bed after frost danger, then move young plants to their permanent bed the following spring. Asparagus develops a substantial root system, so use deep containers and avoid repeated transplanting.
When to start Asparagus seeds
For indoor starts, sow 10 to 12 weeks before the average last spring frost. Direct sow after the last frost once soil is warming, or sow in a nursery bed during spring for transplanting the following year.
How to sow the seeds
Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep in sterile, well-drained seed-starting mix in deep cells or small pots at least 3 to 4 inches deep. Keep indoor seedlings under strong light and pot them up carefully if roots fill the container before outdoor planting.
Germination
Seeds commonly germinate in 14 to 21 days, although they can take longer in cool conditions. Warm soil around 70 to 85 F and steady, light moisture promote more even sprouting.
Seedling care
Give seedlings bright light, water when the mix begins to dry, and avoid standing water. Provide airflow and clean containers to prevent damping off, and thin direct-sown plants so each has room to develop roots.
Transplanting & hardening off
Harden indoor seedlings off for 7 to 10 days, then plant after frost in a temporary nursery bed or permanent asparagus bed. Space plants according to the variety and bed plan, keep the roots moist during planting, and wait until plants are well established before harvesting.
Tips
Mark the bed carefully, because asparagus is perennial and can produce for many years. Remove weeds early, as young asparagus seedlings compete poorly.
