About Blue Hubbard
Blue Hubbard is a large heirloom Cucurbita maxima with a hard, bumpy, blue-gray rind and a tapered teardrop shape, and mature fruits can weigh well over fifteen pounds. The fine-grained flesh is sweet and firm, and the thick rind makes it one of the best long-storage winter squashes. The plants are sprawling and vigorous, and gardeners often plant them at field edges as a trap crop to draw squash bugs and cucumber beetles away from other cucurbits.
Growing Blue Hubbard Winter Squash
Plan for a long season of roughly 100 to 120 days and a lot of room, since a single plant can cover a wide area. Harvest before frost once the rind is fully hardened, and expect excellent storage life when kept cool and dry. Scout regularly for squash bugs and vine borer, especially if you are using the plants as a pest trap.
