Texas Early Grano 502 is a short-day Grano-type onion that has long been used as a foundation for sweet Southern onions. It produces top-shaped to pear-shaped bulbs with pale straw-yellow skin and very mild, sweet, juicy flesh. It matures early for a short-day onion, which suits it to mild-winter growing regions.
Growing Texas Early Grano 502 Onion
Sow or transplant in fall to early winter in the South, spacing plants about 3 to 4 inches apart so bulbs can size while day length is short. Steady water and fertile soil promote large, sweet bulbs, but avoid bolting by not setting out oversized transplants too early. It is a sweet onion with limited storage, so cure and use the bulbs soon after harvest when the necks soften.
