Red Zeppelin is a long-day hybrid red onion that stands out for combining deep-red color with good storage ability, which is unusual among red onions. It forms firm, round to globe-shaped bulbs with glossy red skin and white flesh ringed in red, offering a pungent yet balanced flavor. Its solid structure lets it keep far longer than most fresh-use red types.
Growing Red Zeppelin Onion
Grow from transplants set out in early spring, spacing about 4 inches apart in fertile, well-drained soil for uniform globe bulbs. As a long-day onion it is best suited to northern latitudes where summer days are long. Cure the bulbs well after the tops fall and necks dry, and properly stored onions will hold their color and quality through much of the winter.
