Candy is an intermediate-day (day-neutral) hybrid onion valued for its wide adaptability across many US latitudes. It grows into large, sometimes jumbo, globe-shaped bulbs with yellow skin and sweet, mild flesh. Its flexible day-length requirement makes it one of the easiest sweet onions for gardeners in the central states.
Growing Candy Onion
Set out transplants in early spring, spacing about 4 to 5 inches apart in rich, well-drained soil with consistent moisture to reach full size. Because it is intermediate-day, it performs well across a broad middle band of the country where long-day and short-day types struggle. It stores better than many sweet onions but is still best used within a couple of months after curing.
