Popcorn Crop Rotation

Popcorn is a heavy feeder that pulls a lot of nitrogen from the soil, so rotating it each year keeps beds fertile and helps break the cycle of corn pests and diseases. Moving it around your garden also gives the soil time to recover before you plant such a demanding crop again.

Popcorn belongs to the grass family (Poaceae), the same group as sweet corn, dent corn, and popcorn's other corn relatives, along with grain grasses like wheat, oats, and sorghum. These relatives share several of the same pests and diseases, so they should be treated as one group when you plan a rotation.

Why rotate popcorn

When corn grows in the same spot year after year, soilborne problems build up, including corn rootworm larvae, wireworms, cutworms, and fungal diseases such as root and stalk rots. As a heavy nitrogen feeder, corn also draws down soil fertility quickly, and repeated planting leaves the ground depleted and more prone to these pest and disease pressures. Rotating breaks these cycles and gives the soil a chance to rebuild.

What to plant after

Popcorn does very well following a legume such as beans, peas, or a clover or vetch cover crop, because legumes fix nitrogen in the soil and leave it enriched for the hungry corn that follows. Root crops or leafy greens also make fine predecessors since they are not in the grass family and do not leave behind the same pests. The goal is to feed the soil before you plant this heavy feeder.

What to avoid

Avoid planting popcorn right before or after sweet corn, dent corn, or other corn types, and be cautious following grain grasses like wheat or sorghum, since they share corn's pests such as rootworm and wireworm and its stalk and root rot diseases. Growing corn on corn concentrates these problems and drains fertility. Give the bed a break with an unrelated crop instead.

Example rotation

A simple four-year plan for one bed: Year 1 plant legumes such as bush beans or peas to build nitrogen, Year 2 plant popcorn to use that boost of fertility, Year 3 plant a root or leafy crop like carrots, beets, or lettuce, and Year 4 plant a fruiting crop such as squash or tomatoes. In Year 5 you return to legumes and begin the cycle again, so corn only comes back to that spot every four years.

Tips

Keep a simple garden map or notebook each season so you always know where corn grew and can wait at least two to three years before it returns to the same bed. Sowing a nitrogen-fixing cover crop like clover or vetch in the off season is an easy way to restore the fertility that popcorn uses up.
