Winter Squash Pests & Diseases
Winter squash and its cucurbit relatives face two standout insect threats, the squash bug and the squash vine borer, along with cucumber beetles that spread disease as they feed. On the disease side, powdery mildew is nearly universal by late summer, and beetle-vectored bacterial wilt can collapse healthy-looking vines almost overnight.

Common Winter Squash pests
Squash bugs (Anasa tristis) are flat, gray-brown shield-shaped insects that lay bronze egg clusters in the V of leaf veins; both adults and gray nymphs pierce leaves and stems, causing yellow spotting, wilting, and dieback. Squash vine borers are the larvae of a clear-winged, orange-and-black moth; the fat white grubs tunnel inside the main stem near the base, leaving sawdust-like frass and causing sudden vine collapse. Striped and spotted cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittatum and Diabrotica undecimpunctata) chew leaves and flowers and transmit bacterial wilt. Aphids, spider mites, and in the South the pickleworm can also be problems, while deer, groundhogs, voles, and squirrels may browse foliage or gnaw fruit.
Common diseases
Powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) is the most common problem, showing as white powdery patches on upper and lower leaf surfaces that spread until leaves brown and dry. Downy mildew produces angular yellow blotches on top of leaves with grayish fuzz beneath in humid weather. Bacterial wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila), spread by cucumber beetles, causes runners to wilt and die even though the soil is moist, and cut stems ooze a sticky sap that strings when touched. Gummy stem blight and Fusarium crown rot cause stem cankers and collapse, while aphid-spread mosaic viruses (cucumber mosaic, zucchini yellow mosaic, watermelon mosaic) leave mottled, puckered, distorted leaves and warty, misshapen fruit.
Prevention
Rotate cucurbits so squash does not follow squash or other family members for at least two to three years, and clear out spent vines and fallen fruit at season end to deny pests and fungi a place to overwinter. Space plants generously and orient rows for good airflow so leaves dry quickly, and water at the base with drip or a soaker hose rather than wetting the foliage. Choose powdery mildew resistant or tolerant varieties where available, and consider a slightly later planting or a quick early planting to sidestep peak vine borer flight. Keep plants vigorous with balanced fertility and steady moisture, since stressed vines are more prone to both insects and disease.
Organic control
Cover young plants with floating row covers from transplant until flowering to block squash bugs, borers, and cucumber beetles, then remove the covers so bees can pollinate. Scout regularly and hand-pick squash bugs, crush their egg clusters, and lay a board on the soil overnight to trap adults you can collect at dawn. For vine borers, some gardeners apply Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt kurstaki) into or around the base of the stem early in the season, and can also mound soil over lower nodes to encourage backup rooting. Treat aphids and mites with insecticidal soap or neem oil aimed at the undersides of leaves, and manage powdery mildew with sulfur or potassium bicarbonate applied at first sign, using copper only where a bacterial or downy problem is confirmed. With any product, read and follow the label directions, and spray late in the day to protect pollinators.
Scouting & monitoring
Begin checking twice a week as soon as vines start to run, looking on the undersides of leaves and along stems for squash bug adults, nymphs, and their coppery egg clusters. Watch for the day-flying vine borer moth in early to midsummer, and inspect the base of main stems for holes and frass so you can act before a vine wilts. Turn a few leaves over at each visit to catch aphids, mites, and the first powdery white specks of mildew, and note any beetle feeding since beetles signal wilt-virus risk. Early, frequent scouting is what lets least-toxic controls succeed before populations or infections explode.
Tips
The single biggest win is preventing squash bug and vine borer buildup, so pair row covers on young plants with regular egg-crushing patrols, and pull and destroy any collapsed vines right away. Accept that powdery mildew will likely arrive late in the season, and focus on keeping foliage dry, spaced, and treated early rather than expecting to eliminate it entirely.
