Pumpkins Pests & Diseases
Pumpkins are heavy, sprawling cucurbits that draw a predictable lineup of insect pests, especially squash bugs and squash vine borers, along with cucumber beetles that also spread bacterial wilt. The biggest disease pressures are powdery mildew and downy mildew on the foliage, so an integrated approach that emphasizes prevention gives home gardeners the best results.

Common Pumpkins pests
Squash bugs (Anasa tristis) are flat, gray-brown shield-shaped insects that suck sap, causing leaves to wilt, yellow, and develop dark speckling; look for their bronze, football-shaped egg clusters on the undersides of leaves. Squash vine borers are the larvae of a clearwing moth that tunnel inside the main stem near the base, causing sudden wilting and leaving sawdust-like frass at a hole low on the vine. Striped and spotted cucumber beetles (Acalymma vittatum and Diabrotica undecimpunctata) chew leaves, flowers, and rinds and transmit bacterial wilt. Aphids (including the melon or cotton aphid) cluster on new growth and spread mosaic viruses, while spider mites cause fine stippling and webbing in hot, dry spells. Larger animal pests such as deer, groundhogs, squirrels, and voles browse leaves and gnaw on developing fruit.
Common diseases
Powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) is the most common problem, showing up as white, talc-like patches on leaves and stems that spread until foliage yellows and dies. Downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora cubensis) produces angular yellow blotches on the upper leaf surface with grayish fuzzy growth underneath in humid weather. Bacterial wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila), carried by cucumber beetles, causes runners to wilt and collapse even when soil is moist. Other diseases include gummy stem blight and black rot (Didymella bryoniae), Phytophthora blight in wet or poorly drained soil, anthracnose, and aphid-spread mosaic viruses that cause mottled, distorted, stunted leaves and mottled fruit.
Prevention
Rotate cucurbits so pumpkins do not follow squash, melons, or cucumbers for two to three years, and give vines wide spacing so air moves freely and foliage dries quickly. Choose powdery mildew tolerant or resistant varieties when available, and start with healthy transplants or seed. Water at the base with drip or a soaker hose rather than overhead, and water in the morning so leaves are not wet overnight. Clean up and remove old vines, fruit, and debris at the end of the season to reduce overwintering pests and disease, and keep plants vigorous with balanced feeding and even moisture.
Organic control
Floating row covers placed at planting are the single best defense against squash bugs, vine borers, and cucumber beetles, but remove them once flowers open so bees can pollinate. Scout and hand-pick squash bugs and crush their egg clusters, and use a board laid on the soil overnight as a trap to collect adults in the morning. Encourage beneficial insects and pollinators, and treat aphid or mite outbreaks with insecticidal soap or neem oil, applied in the evening to protect bees and following the product label. For powdery and downy mildew, apply a labeled sulfur, copper, or potassium bicarbonate product at the first sign and repeat per the label, and remove the worst-infected leaves promptly.
Scouting & monitoring
Begin scouting at transplant or seedling emergence and check at least weekly, looking under leaves for squash bug eggs and adults and watching the base of stems for the frass and entry holes of vine borers from early to midsummer. Inspect leaf undersides for aphid colonies and mite stippling, especially in hot weather, and watch for the first white powdery spots or angular yellow lesions that signal mildew. Note any single runner that wilts suddenly, which points to vine borer or bacterial wilt, so you can act before the whole plant is lost. Catching egg clusters and the earliest disease spots is far easier than fighting a full infestation.
Tips
Prevention beats rescue with pumpkins, so combine crop rotation, wide spacing, base watering, and row covers early, then remove the covers at bloom for pollination. Walk the patch weekly and destroy squash bug eggs by hand, because a few minutes of scouting prevents most of the damage these pests cause.
