How to Start Carrots From Seed

Carrots are best started from seed where they will grow, because their long taproots are easily disturbed. Sow several times for a longer harvest.

Carrots

Start indoors or direct sow?

Direct sow carrots outdoors, rather than starting them indoors or transplanting them. Even careful transplanting can cause forked or misshapen roots.

When to start Carrots seeds

Sow outdoors 2 to 4 weeks before the average last spring frost, once soil can be worked. Make additional sowings every 2 to 3 weeks through late spring, and again in late summer for a fall crop.

How to sow the seeds

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in loose, stone-free garden soil, then cover lightly and firm gently. Plant in shallow rows or bands, keeping the seedbed evenly moist until seedlings emerge.

Germination

Carrots commonly germinate in 14 to 21 days, sometimes longer in cool soil. Soil near 55 to 75°F and steady surface moisture encourage more even emergence.

Seedling care

Give seedlings full sun and water gently so the top layer of soil does not dry out during germination. Thin gradually to about 2 to 3 inches apart, and avoid crusting soil or overwatering.

Transplanting & hardening off

Direct sown crop, so transplanting is not recommended. Keep rows weeded early because young carrot seedlings compete poorly.

Tips

Mix carrot seed with dry sand for easier, more even sowing. A light board, burlap, or row cover can help retain moisture until sprouts appear, but remove it promptly after emergence.
