How to Start Globe Artichoke From Seed

Globe artichokes are usually started indoors from seed because they need a long season to form large plants and edible buds. In many colder US climates, they are grown as annuals, though they can be perennial in mild-winter areas.

Start indoors or direct sow?

Start indoors and transplant, since seedlings need an early start and are manageable in pots. Unlike beans and corn, artichokes transplant well when roots are kept intact.

When to start Globe Artichoke seeds

Start seeds indoors 8 to 12 weeks before the last spring frost. Transplant outdoors 2 to 4 weeks before the last frost in mild conditions after hardening off, or after the last frost where late freezes are common.

How to sow the seeds

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in a sterile seed-starting mix, using cells at least 2 inches wide or small individual pots. Keep containers warm and evenly moist, then pot up seedlings before they become root-bound.

Germination

Germination usually takes 10 to 21 days at about 70 to 75°F. Keep the mix consistently moist but airy, never saturated, while seeds are sprouting.

Seedling care

After emergence, provide very bright light, ideally 14 to 16 hours under grow lights, and water when the mix begins to dry at the surface. Use good airflow and clean containers to prevent damping off, and thin to one strong seedling per cell.

Transplanting & hardening off

Harden seedlings off over 7 to 10 days before planting in full sun, rich well-drained soil, spaced about 3 to 4 feet apart. Set plants at the same depth as in their pots and protect them from a hard freeze with row cover if needed.

Tips

Choose a seed variety bred for annual production if you garden in a cold-winter climate. Large, sturdy transplants establish better than tiny seedlings, so pot them up if they outgrow their cells before planting time.
