About Palla Rossa
Palla Rossa, meaning red ball, is a classic round Verona-type radicchio that forms a dense, softball-sized head of deep burgundy leaves veined in white. It is a traditional open-pollinated Italian variety prized for reliable heading and a characteristic bitter bite. Several selections exist, some improved for tighter heads and better cold tolerance.
Growing Palla Rossa Radicchio
Direct sow or transplant in summer for fall and early winter harvest, giving each plant roughly 10 to 12 inches of space. It heads best as temperatures drop, and a light frost improves both sweetness and color.
