About King of the Garden

King of the Garden is a vigorous heirloom pole lima that climbs tall on strong vines and produces large, flat, pale green seeds. It is a heavy yielder over a long season, bearing broad pods that often hold four or more sizable beans with a classic buttery lima flavor. The climbing habit keeps foliage and pods off the ground and makes for easy hand picking.

Growing King of the Garden Lima Bean

Provide a sturdy trellis, pole, or netting at least 6 to 8 feet tall before or at planting, and space plants roughly 6 to 10 inches apart at the base of the support. Being a pole lima it needs a long, warm growing season to mature its large seeds, so start it as early as the soil allows in warm climates. Pick pods steadily once they are plump and filled to encourage continued flowering, and harvest while pods are still green for fresh shell beans.
