About Henderson's Bush
Henderson's Bush is a classic heirloom baby lima, often called a butterbean, that grows on a compact bush rather than a climbing vine. It produces heavy clusters of short pods filled with small, flat, pale green to creamy white seeds that have a tender, buttery texture and mild flavor. Because it is one of the earliest limas to mature, it is a dependable choice for gardeners with shorter or cooler summers.
Growing Henderson's Bush Lima Bean
Sow seeds directly about 2 to 4 inches apart in rows once the soil has warmed to at least 65 degrees F, since lima seeds rot in cold, wet ground. As a true bush type it needs no trellis, but give plants room for air circulation to reduce foliar disease in humid climates. Pick pods when they feel plump and filled but are still bright green for fresh use, or leave them on the plant to dry for shell beans.
