How to Start Chamomile From Seed

Chamomile is easy to grow from seed, especially the annual German type. Roman chamomile is perennial and slower to establish, but it can also be started from seed.

Start indoors or direct sow?

Direct sowing works well because chamomile seed is tiny and seedlings establish quickly, though indoor starts are useful for an earlier display. If starting indoors, transplant carefully while seedlings are small and avoid disturbing the roots unnecessarily.

When to start Chamomile seeds

Direct sow in early spring, about 2 to 4 weeks before the average last frost, or in fall in mild climates. For indoor starts, sow about 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost and transplant after hardening off.

How to sow the seeds

Surface sow seeds on a moist, sterile seed-starting mix in cell packs or shallow trays, then press them in without covering, as light aids germination. For direct sowing, scatter on finely prepared soil, press lightly, and keep the seedbed gently moist.

Germination

Seeds usually sprout in about 7 to 14 days. Soil near 60 to 70 F and consistent surface moisture support germination, but soggy conditions can rot small seedlings.

Seedling care

Give seedlings full sun or very bright grow lights and water gently so the fine stems are not knocked over. Use clean mix and airflow to prevent damping off, then thin direct-sown plants to roughly 6 to 12 inches apart, depending on type.

Transplanting & hardening off

For indoor starts, harden seedlings off for about a week and transplant after the soil is workable and severe freezes are unlikely. Set them at the same depth and water lightly; direct-sown chamomile does not need transplanting.

Tips

Do not bury the seed, because it needs light to germinate well. German chamomile readily self-sows, so leave a few spent flowers if you want plants next year.
