What affects Wheat prices
US wheat prices reflect production by class, milling and feed demand, export demand, crop quality, and supplies from other major exporting countries. Winter wheat is concentrated across the central and southern Plains, including Kansas, while spring wheat is important in North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, and South Dakota; soft red winter wheat is prominent east of the Mississippi River and in parts of the Midwest. Drought, winterkill, spring moisture, heat, disease, and harvest rains affect yields and protein or milling quality. Wheat is storable and globally traded, so inland handling, rail and barge freight, port capacity, currency relationships, and world crop conditions influence US market values.
Winter wheat is planted in autumn, emerges from dormancy in spring, and is generally harvested from late spring into summer, while spring wheat is harvested later in summer and early autumn. This staggered calendar produces multiple domestic supply waves rather than one single harvest period. Wheat stores well and is carried in elevators and mills across the year, allowing flour milling and export programs to continue between harvests. Seasonal availability also reflects the timing of foreign harvests, especially in competing Northern Hemisphere exporters and Southern Hemisphere suppliers later in the year.
