What affects Barley prices

US barley prices are driven primarily by feed demand, malting demand from brewers and distillers, and the size and quality of the crop. Production is concentrated in the Northern Plains, especially Montana, North Dakota, and Idaho, with important additional output in Washington and other western states. Spring moisture, heat during grain fill, disease pressure, and harvest weather affect yields and whether barley meets malting specifications. Barley competes with corn and other feed grains, while Canadian trade and transportation costs can materially influence supplies available to US users.

Most US barley is planted in spring and harvested from late summer into early autumn, creating the largest new-crop supply window after harvest. Supplies are then held in commercial and farm storage for feed and malt use through the year, although quality requirements can limit which lots are suitable for malting. The United States may supplement domestic supplies with Canadian barley, particularly when regional needs or quality specifications are not fully met. Seasonal availability is therefore shaped by harvest timing, stored inventories, and the pace of domestic and cross-border shipments.
