Tennessee hay production
Tennessee produces mainly grass hay for its large cattle and horse sectors, with tall fescue, orchardgrass, bermudagrass, and mixed grass stands common; alfalfa occupies a much smaller share. Hay is produced statewide, with important livestock and forage areas in Middle Tennessee, the Cumberland Plateau, and East Tennessee. Production is predominantly dryland, and growers commonly make two to four cuttings during the late-spring through fall growing season, subject to rainfall and drying windows.
