About American Flag

American Flag is a traditional leek with sturdy blue-green foliage and medium to large white shanks. It is a dependable old garden type, more valued for versatility and flavor than for extreme earliness or deep winter standing.

Growing American Flag Leek

Start early so plants have time to build thick stems, and set transplants deeply or hill soil around them to blanch longer white shafts. Harvest from pencil-thick onward, but do not leave it standing into severe winter cold like the hardiest overwintering strains.
