How it works

One acre is 43,560 square feet. Each plant is given a rectangle of ground equal to the row spacing multiplied by the in-row spacing. Dividing the area of an acre by the area each plant occupies gives the plants per acre:

Plants per acre = 43,560 ÷ ( (row inches ÷ 12) × (plant inches ÷ 12) )

The same math scales to any field: multiply plants per acre by the number of acres. This assumes a simple rectangular grid and does not subtract space lost to headlands, drive rows, or skips, so treat the result as a maximum theoretical stand.

Common uses

Growers use plants-per-acre figures to order transplants and seed, to compare planting densities, and to estimate yield potential. Tighter spacing raises the plant count but can increase competition, disease pressure, and the need for water and nutrients; wider spacing lowers the count but often improves size and airflow. Your seed tag and local Cooperative Extension recommendations are the best guide to the right density for a given crop and region.
