How it works

Area is simply length times width. One acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, so the acreage is the field area divided by that number:

Acres = ( length ft × width ft ) ÷ 43,560

The tool also converts to metric units using 1 square foot = 0.092903 square meters and 1 hectare = 10,000 square meters (about 2.471 acres). For an irregular field, split it into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add the areas together.

Why acreage matters

Acreage is the base unit for almost every farm calculation in the US: seeding rates, fertilizer and lime rates, yield per acre, and land rent are all quoted per acre. Knowing a field's exact size prevents over-ordering seed and inputs and makes yield comparisons meaningful. For legal boundaries and official records, rely on a surveyed plat rather than a tape-measure estimate.
