Sprinklers apply water over a broad area, much like rainfall. They can cover lawns and larger garden spaces with less hand labor than spot watering. Because they wet both soil and foliage, careful timing and placement matter.
How it works
A sprinkler throws or sprays water into the air so it falls across the target area. Different spray patterns can cover circles, strips, or wider spaces depending on the setup. This broad coverage can be useful where many plants are packed together or where turf is being watered. Some water may be lost to wind drift and evaporation, especially in hot or breezy conditions.
Best for
It works best for lawns, large annual beds, and areas where uniform overhead coverage is needed. It is generally more suitable for broad plantings than for isolated shrubs or widely spaced vegetables that benefit from targeted watering.
Tips
Water early in the day when conditions are usually calmer and cooler. Position sprinklers to avoid sidewalks, driveways, and other hard surfaces where water is wasted. Check coverage from time to time so dry spots and overly wet areas can be corrected.
