Drip irrigation delivers water slowly and directly to the root zone of plants. It helps reduce water loss from evaporation and runoff compared with broader watering methods. When set up well, it can keep soil moisture more even over time.
How it works
A drip system moves water through tubing and releases it through small emitters or openings placed near plants. The water soaks into the soil a little at a time, which allows roots to absorb moisture efficiently. Because only a limited area is watered, fewer weeds may germinate between plants. The system can be arranged for garden beds, rows, or individual plants.
Best for
It works best in vegetable gardens, perennial beds, shrubs, and areas with plants spaced far enough apart for targeted watering. It is especially useful where water conservation matters or where foliage should stay dry to help limit some plant disease problems.
Tips
Check emitters regularly for clogs, leaks, or damaged tubing. Place water where the active roots are growing, and adjust the layout as plants mature. Run the system long enough for moisture to reach the root zone instead of only wetting the surface.
